Living in Solidarity

Universal Love

"Love the poor, and do not turn your back on them, for if you turn your back on the poor, you turn your back on Christ.  He made himself hungry, naked, homeless, so that you and I would have an opportunity to love him."

-Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997)

Principle of Solidarity:

A principle of solidarity, also articulated in terms of 'friendship' or 'social charity', is a direct demand of human and Christian brotherhood.  (CCC 1939)

"Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet"; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, "Love your neighbor as yourself."  Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fullfilling of the law."                                  Romans 13: 8-10

Official Teachings

Catechesis does not teach the faith as an end in itself but leads the disciple to a sense of mission.  The Christian mission is lived in everyday life at work, school, home, or in cultural and social settings. (GDC 86)

Christians are committed to just societal structures. Part of this is universal access to the material, intellectual, and spiritual goods of this world.  Christians also make sure that the dignty of human work is respected, which inlcuded a just wage. Handing on the faith is also an act of solidarity with all mankind.  (YOUCAT 332)
